Between November 29th and December 3rd 2007 the 17th international biennial conference on Marine Mammalogy was held in Cape Town, South Africa. This conference attracts marine mammal scientists from all over the world and is regarded as the most significant conference of its kind. This year’s conference was held in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time and was significantly smaller in attendance than previous conferences (approx. 1000 delegates compared with > 2500 in previous years). This was beneficial in the sense that it was far easier to meet and talk with individuals. The conference presented many opportunities for networking as well as catching up with many colleagues from around the world.
Also for the first time, marinemammalresearch.com was represented at this conference!
David Donnelly attended the conference representing MMR where the priority was to discuss research project opportunities with potential collaborators and proposing ideas. Some of the main topics for discussion were; investigating the diversity and density of cetaceans along the Sapphire Coast, New South Wales as well as expanding the work currently underway with killer whales. Many individuals demonstrated significant interest in MMR, as well as in the proposed research projects.
All in all, attending the marine mammal conference was successful in establishing strong networks within the field of research that we hope to investigate
